I have concerns about my child's progress in development. What do I do first?

Progressive development is based on age ranges, i.e., Not using single words by 12 months, not putting simple sentences together by 2, full sentences by 3, grade school children not using synonyms/antonyms.

What if I am worried as a parent, but others (i.e. family, medical professionals, etc.) are telling me there is nothing wrong, or to wait 6 more months?

It is best to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to your child’s development. If you feel your child has a developmental issue that should be addressed, please call Straight Talk Speech Therapy for a free consultation.

How do I know if my child needs occupational, Physical, or speech therapy?

There is no set developmental timeline for all children. Children often develop in ranges rather than specific ages. If your child is not sitting up by 6 months, pulling up by 9 months, walking by 12-14 months, it may be time to schedule a consultation with Straight Talk Speech Therapy.

Does my child need a formal evaluation?

If your child has already been evaluated, please let us know and have copies of the paperwork available when you meet with one of our team members. Otherwise, yes your child will need a formal evaluation completed.

How long does my child need therapy?

The length your child will be in therapy will depend on the severity of the issues, their reception of the therapy, and your involvement as a parent.

How do I know if my child has reflex issues?

W sitting, weakness in hip/flexibility, coordination difficulties could be signs of a developmental weakness.

What is occupational therapy and why does my child need it?

Occupational Therapy helps children with the jobs of living – getting dressed, school tasks, feeding, buttoning, and also social interactions.

Insurance providers generally require a prescription for evaluation/treatment, check with your insurance provider for their requirements on treating medical conditions with Occupational Therapy. However, Straight Talk is a self-pay practice, so a referral is not required for treatment.

At Straight Talk, children are treated through play with engaging, child-centered activities… your child won’t even know they’re in therapy.
